Safety Online for Teens

In today’s digital world where everything is shifting to the internet, it would be a disadvantage to not allow your pre-teens or teens into the world of the internet.
Young adults now need to use digital technology for everyday activities like staying connected with friends on social media, entertainment and doing schoolwork and research a solution to a pressing need or challenge.
No matter how hard we try as parents, we cannot be with them all the time, hence the need to empower them to identify acceptable and unacceptable online content independently and make the right choices online most of the time.
According to most research the top four safety online issues plaguing young adults are:
Content Risks: which is about materials that one might find unpalatable, such as terrorist sites, sexually explicit contents, fake news, hate sites, real or simulated violence site, harmful user-generated content like sites about drug use, self-harm, suicide, or negative body image.
•Contact Risks: include encountering adults posing as children online, strangers who persuade teenagers to send them photos or videos of themselves or meet them in real life, and online scammers.
Conduct Risks: which talks about behaviors online that are unacceptable such as cyberbullying, identity theft, sexting, staying online forever.
Contract Risks: include teenagers signing up to unfair contracts, subscriptions or terms and conditions that they are not aware of or do not fully understand. As a result, teenagers might be open to identity theft or fraud, get inappropriate marketing messages or fraud emails that have their personal data collected from apps and devices.
Are you a parent of a teen, please sign them up for our mentoring workshop this summer as we through practical steps empower them to better identify and better manage such risks when online.
